Texas and Back …

Posted by J.J. on March 7, 2010 with 0 Comments

Morning started out good enough with some fresh baked muffins.  Today was a lax day as all we had to do was make it to El Paso, TX.  We packed up and headed out around 10am.  Just outside of Dragoon, AZ we started seeing billboards advertising “The Thing”.  We had time to kill so we stopped.

While I topped off the tank the co-pilot went in to take a look.  After I was finished with the gas I went inside.  The search for the co-pilot officially begins here.  Two laps around the store and a trip to the register to see if they saw him.  I asked, “Did you happen to see a man that looks like a stop sign?  He is wearing a bright red Hawaiian shirt and bright red shorts. “  She recalled seeing him walk in but that was all.  Okay I have been in the shop for ten minutes and can’t find him.  So I stop and wait … and here he comes out of the “Employees Only” area.  He said he was using the restroom … not the public ones.

So we pay $1 and go to see what “The Thing” is.  We walk around the three sheds and look at the museum type displays.  After asking yourself, “Why did I pay $1 for this?” you’re finally reminded of that other question, the one that lured you from the interstate.  What is the Thing?

We hit the highway and make the four hour trek to El Paso, TX.  Let’s just say that four hours straight is a long drive … when you have someone next to you eating Pringles.  Maybe it was to long drive but after awhile the opening of the Pringles can, the removal of one chip, to closing of the Pringles can, the return of the can to the cup holder and then the slow eating of said chip … gets really annoying.  In four hours he consumed a whole can of Pringles using this method.  If I was thinking straight I would have video tapped it.

We arrived in El Paso and El Paso RV Parks did not welcome us with open arms … or closed arms for that fact.  There was just for f’n arms for us in El Paso.  All RV Parks were full and unattended … no room for us.  After an internet search we located one back in New Mexico.  So we made the 40 mile trek back to New Mexico.

Got to the park, got all set up, took Chopper for a walk and now it is time to relax.

Line at Lindy’s

Posted by J.J. on March 6, 2010 with 0 Comments

Hey it’s vacation why am I up at 3am?  I guess that’s the price you pay for going to bed early.  After some delicious French toast sticks we packed up and hit the road.  First stop was a gas station for a fill up then too the open road.

I was unable to get a photo of it but there were 3 medi-vac helicopters and many emergency vehicles sitting in the center divider.  What I gather as we passed was there was an SUV that had rolled over and ejected a few occupants.

We made it to the first shop and father got NO CSP’s but did get 13 district patches.  I was informed today that he has a collection of them also.  I am guess this is something new.  We made it to the second stop and he picked up his first CSP’s of the trip, a whole 4 of them.

After that the plans was to go to Lindy’s in Tucson … a food place that I saw on Man vs. Food.  We made our way over there and the line was out the door.  There was also no place to park the beast within a couple blocks … so we opted out and headed down the road.

We made it to Benson, AZ and the first RV Park was full.  The second RV Park had no one in the office.  The third (where we are staying) is run by a crazy old dude.  But they have Cable and it is only $23 a night to say here.

I realize that the first two day might be uneventful for you to read … but it is what it is.

Day One – Hairy Armpits

Posted by J.J. on March 5, 2010 with 0 Comments

We started earlier then we original planned today … my work laptop took a dump yesterday and needed a little help.  We left the house around 7:30am and drove to the Arcadia office, where my laptop was resuscitated.  We headed out of there at noon and made the trek to Redlands, CA.

Don’t worry Karen … I won’t post the picture of your new ride on here … well at least not yet.

Redlands was where I saw history in the making.  I have never seen my father not buy csp patches at a place that had csp patches for sale.  Since he had them all I guess he is saving his wade for the mother load.  After the stop in Redlands we headed to Blythe to do some grocery shopping.

While grocery shopping there was a good looking lady buying booze … THEN … she raised her arm to place the items on the belt.  WOW, I can now say that I have seen the Amazon forest with my own eyes.  Really, shouldn’t a guardian step in at one point and bic that shit?  We did some light shopping to tide us over for a few days, loaded up and headed to Quartzite, AZ.

We got a site without a problem … not to bad at $27 for full hookups.  We got set up in no time and took Chopper for a walk.  Then it was movie and blog time … now it is bed time.

Old?  Yes I am.

For daily mundane life updates you can follow along at http://www.sundaypeak.com … getting that started back up after a week.

Long and Lonely Road …

Posted by J.J. on September 26, 2009 with 0 Comments

Today we left the Utah RV Park around 9:00am.  The co-pilot kept asking when we were leaving … not sure what he was so amped about … we had no planned stops other then I RV Park for the night.  We stopped and had breakfast at a little local dive then got some gas.

We were on the road by 10:00am for our seven hour trek to Las Vegas, Nevada.  There was NOTHING except a lot of driving today so the co-pilot slept most of the way.  We rolled in to Las Vegas around 4:00pm (due to the time change), got a spot at the RV Park, got all set up, took Chopper for a walk and Kelly (Holley’s sister picked me up.

Went to their house and worked on music for Judy’s service.  They were pretty spent from the emotional rollercoaster (I could tell since I have been there).  We got the songs picked out and they (Holley and Kelly) took a nap.  When Kelly woke up she drove me back to the RV and I called it a night.

Tomorrow we are headed home, a day early.  I have a lot to do before I leave on Tuesday to Indiana for Judy’s service.

It Rubs the Lotion …

Posted by J.J. on September 25, 2009 with 2 Comments

I woke the co-pilot up at 7:30am so we could make our breakfast commitment he made with Steve and Todd.  Packed up real quick and make the trek over to the shop.  We got the ten cent tour and headed out for breakfast.  Went to a goof little restaurant with so very good eats.  After breakfast we returned to the shop, said out goodbyes and headed out.

We stopped got some gas and a Persian Gas Station, that was a first for me … I did not realize they existed.  From there we headed to our first shop for the day, co-pilot got patches, NO special issues, NO patch sleeves and a new one District Patches.  I guess he is starting a new collection.

snow_tunnel

We made the three hundred plus mile trek to the next stop where the co-pilot obtained patches, special issues and NO patch sleeves.  I took Chopper for a walk while he was in there so he could empty the bladder.  When I got back inside … we now had a side trip.  We followed a guy to his house to do a little patch trading … well that is what they said … I was sure it was to be killed.

We spent about an hour at the dudes house, co-pilot and him trading patches … fun times for all.  We got all packed up and ready to head out and the dude would not shut up.  He just stood at the window and kept talking.  I kept saying alright we need to hit the road … which his response was a question.  He even asked the same questions multiple times.  At one point he asked if we wanted to stay for dinner … soup and crackers … nope dude, we need to go.

We made the remainder of the ninety mile trek to Green River, Utah.  The name of this town appears to be a farce or maybe we have not driven far enough yet.  We got to the RV Park, got set up, feed and took Chopper for a walk and the co-pilot had ice cream for dinner.  Tomorrow we will in Las Vegas, Nevada, staying there for two nights them an early drive home on Monday.

Until tomorrow …

Trying to Cope …

Posted by J.J. on September 24, 2009 with 0 Comments

Last night we stayed in Pueblo, Colorado at a KOA.  If you are in the area and looking for a spot … this should be it.  GPS will not get you there … unless an empty dirt field is what you are looking for.

Our last stop yesterday was closed when we got there, so we headed back there this morning.  Co-pilot got patches, special issues and NO patch sleeves.   Our second stop today took us to Colorado Springs, Colorado where there were patches, special issues and NO patch sleeves.

At this point it was breakfast time and nowhere else but good old Cracker Barrel.  Good eats as always and since we were pretty sure this was the last one of the trip we picked up a few thing is the store.  Chopper likes it where we stop here because we save out breakfast meat for him … he is not spoiled at all!

After breakfast we headed down the road to stop three … what, they moved!  This trip has had a few stops that are not longer there.  No worries we found it.  Co-pilot got patches, no special issues and NO patch sleeves.

We made our way back to Golden, Colorado and are staying about a mile from where my cousin has his business.  Steve (cousin) stopped by and visited for a bit.  After his visit I did a little cleaning so we are not the “Rolling Shit House” as I like to call it when it gets messy.  Todd (cousin) stopped by and visited for a bit then we met Jenny (Todd’s wife) for dinner at Romano’s Macaroni Grill.  Good eats and some good company.

We all returned to the RV to visit and the co-pilot gave them the ten cent tour.  Chopper for some reason really took to Todd … Chopper would not leave him alone.  After about thirty minutes they left and the co-pilot was wiped out from today’s activates.

I think the co-pilot is taking it easy on me because he knows that I am pretty upset about the loss of Judy (Holley’s mom).  Also I think I have become a little more appreciative of our time together.  Yes the co-pilot and I both have our moments but this time together is building great memories.  For me once he is no longer around or since life is unpredictable for him when I am not longer around.

I am sad for the loss of Judy and it hurts me to know what Holley is going through right now.  If you are close to your mother, when you lose them it is quiet devastating.  Nothing can mentally prepare you for the loss … expected or unexpected.   Nothing is ever the same after that day … holidays are never the same … that seems to me when it hurts the worst.

Roadside Hurling…

Posted by J.J. on September 22, 2009 with 2 Comments

From the previous post you probably know that I am feeling like ass today.  I spent most of the morning tossing my cookies.  I have decided to try Tums to see if that can pull me through the day as I am confident that I got some sort of food poisoning.

We made our first stop and the co-pilot got regular patches and that was all.  Following that we stopped and got some gas and checked the tires.  I asked the co-pilot if he wanted something and he said a Big Mamas Breakfast and I asked really.   This was meet with his response of, “Not Anymore!  Just get me a cheese Danish.”  He did not like that I asked if that is what he really wanted.  From this one occurrence I knew it was going to be a bitch of a day.

Trying to defuse the situation I got the Big Mamas Breakfast and a cheese Danish.  I returned to the RV and offered him a choice of the two.  He replied that he did not want any of it, nothing.  Fine,  I threw everything in the trash in the RV.  We made it about five miles down the road and he got up and took it out of the trash.  Following that I shot this video footage …

Today I noticed that the co-pilot was wearing an Orange shirt and Black shorts, very Halloween.  Yesterday he was wearing a Green shirt with Red shorts, very Christmas.  I am wonder what color combination tomorrow will bring.

In the afternoon the co-pilot told me he was glad that I was feeling better.  Hummm … I told him I am still feeling like crap.  He assumed that I was feeling better because I have not said anything.  Okay we all know I don’t feel good … not sure what the point is in bitching about it all day.  He asked if I just wanted to go to Denver, CO and pass Wichita, KS.  No matter where I was I am going to feel like shit … there is no point in changing our plans.

So at this point I had to pull over and blow chunks road side.  While I was in the middle of blowing chunks the co-pilot asked me if I was hungry … ummm no, I don’t really feel like eating right now.  After this little road side adventure my neck was hurting, think I pulled a muscle.

We arrive in the town for our second stop for the day … while driving through the town I had relations there.  I am beginning that I have relations in every town we go too.  I have heard this in almost every town in Missouri, Nebraska and Kansas.  I know this is true for Lakewood, Colorado … but I am sure that I will not hear it for that town.

We arrive at our second stop and WOW, the are all sold out of the special issues he was hoping to get.  This was meet with the co-pilot stating, “How dare you sell out of the patch I traveled so far to get.”  The lady looked at the co-pilot had a third eye and arm.  I really do not think he get that people do not understand his hobby … the average person does not know what a CSP is.

So I know the co-pilot is in a mood today … I need to find a park with cable or he is going to make my night hell.  I called around and found one but it was thirteen miles out of the way.  A small price to pay!  The entire way there I was bombarded with questions like, “What time is it?”, “How much farther is it?”, “Are you hungry yet?”, “Are you sure the park has cable?” and so on!

Today was hell day for me …. Week one was a little ruff, week two was good and week three is not going well.  Week two must have been the eye of the storm.
